Day 2 Highlights – AlphaFold Workshop 2025

Day 2 of “Enhancing Skills for Structural Biology in India: AlphaFold Workshop with Hands-on Experience” was all about exploration, application, and inspiration!

The day began with a quick recap of Day 1, followed by a doubt-clearing and hands-on discussion with participants.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Martin Steinegger, delivered an exceptional talk on “Exploring the Protein Universe via Highly Accurate Structural Predictions.”

The sessions that followed took participants deeper into practical learning:
🔹 Govinda – Hands-on with the AlphaFold Server
🔹 Jatin Joshi – Installation, setup, and execution of AlphaFold3 on a local Linux system
🔹 Jhanak Saxena – Visualization of predicted structures using PyMOL

Participants then presented their research, showcasing how AlphaFold fits into their ongoing and future work — a true celebration of innovation and learning!

The workshop concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony, graced by Prof. Manisha Goel and Prof. Manish Kumar, marking the successful wrap-up of an enriching two-day event.

Day 1 Highlights – AlphaFold Workshop 2025

An inspiring start to our two-day workshop “Enhancing Skills for Structural Biology in India: AlphaFold Workshop with Hands-on Experience”, organized by RSG-India & EMBL-EBI!

The day began with an inaugural session, marked by the traditional lighting of the diyas by our esteemed professors, followed by an incredible lineup of keynote talks:

The hands-on sessions kicked off with our RSG-India members leading the charge:

Participants also presented their exciting research, showcasing how they are applying (or planning to apply) AlphaFold in their work!

The day concluded with a hands-on session by Govinda, guiding participants on using ColabFold effectively — a perfect wrap-up to an inspiring first day!

About Dr. Debasisa Mohanty
Computational Biologist | Structural Bioinformatics | Machine Learning in Genomics

Passionate about understanding how protein structure, dynamics, and evolution drive biological function and regulation. His research integrates AI, molecular simulations, and systems biology to uncover novel molecular mechanisms in pathogens and model organisms.

🔹 Developed ML tools for predicting small ORFs, phosphorylation sites, and protein–protein modulators.
🔹 Designed algorithms to infer enzyme function, substrate specificity, and ligand binding.
🔹 Created bioinformatics resources for biosynthetic gene clusters (PKS/NRPS) & post-translational modifications.
🔹 Pioneered structure-based prediction of protein–peptide interactions (PDZ, SH3, kinases, etc.).
🔹 Applied systems biology to reveal conserved motifs in metabolic and signaling networks.

Assistant Professor, Biology Department, Seoul National University

🔹 Expert in large-scale sequence data analysis, protein structure prediction, and AlphaFold-powered computational biology.
🔹 Ph.D. from Technical University Munich & Max Planck Institute.
🔹 Postdoc with Prof. Steven Salzberg, Johns Hopkins University, developing methods for pathogen detection, assembly contamination checks, and proteome annotation
🔹 Advocate for open science & open source. 

🔹 Renowned for his contributions to AlphaFold, ColabFold, Foldseek, and MMseqs2, Dr. Steinegger’s research focuses on large-scale sequence data analysis and protein structure prediction, advancing open science and open-source bioinformatics.
